Correction to the earlier version of this page
The earlier version of this page said mutated eggs cannot hatch a different species. That was wrong for Palworld 1.0. A mutated egg can hatch a different, rarer Pal than the pair's normal child.
What a mutated egg actually hatches
Most eggs follow the normal breeding formula or special combo. A small share come out as Mutated Eggs instead. A mutated egg ignores the normal child for that pair and hatches a different Alpha Pal, at the same tier or higher than the expected result, with high IVs, 2-star condensation, and at least one mutation-only (rainbow) passive skill that cannot be obtained any other way.
A concrete example reported by Game8: breeding Munchill + Arsox normally gives Yakumo, a Common-tier Pal. The mutated variation of the same pair hatches Incineram Noct, a rare-tier Pal. The same parents can give different mutated results on different eggs — mutation is a random roll, not a fixed pair.
Reported values: IVs around 90–100, always Alpha, always 2 stars on hatch, at least one rainbow passive. Treat exact IV ranges as reported, not as a published official table.
Mutation chance, and the cake that raises it
The reported base mutation chance is about 1% per egg. Extravagant Vegetable Cake (Technology level 60) raises it to about 3% per egg. Vegetable Cake does not raise the per-egg chance — it gives two eggs per cycle, so you get more rolls, not better odds per roll. Mushroom Cake improves talents but not mutation. Special Cake improves passive inheritance but not mutation.
Rates vary between sources (one source reports a higher base rate). Use 1% / 3% as the commonly reported figures, and judge a mutation farm by eggs produced, not by a promised number of eggs.
What mutation cannot do
Mutation does not let you skip to the top of the chain from common parents. Pals at the very top — including current legendaries and tower bosses, which are locked to same-species breeding — do not have anything above them to mutate into, and 1.0 locks those specific Pals to same-species pairings only. Do not breed two low-tier Pals expecting a mutation to hand you a legendary. Mutation moves you up within the range the parents can reach, not past the top of the game.
How to farm mutations in practice
Keep one fixed pair breeding continuously, keep Extravagant Vegetable Cakes stocked in the farm chest, and keep the farm running. At about 3% per egg, the average wait is roughly 33 eggs, but averages are not guarantees — some players will wait far longer. When a mutated egg appears, it is visibly different (Huge, Alpha) — hatch it, check its rainbow passive, and if it is the passive you wanted, breed that mutated Pal onward to seed the passive into your main line, switching to Special Cake for the passive-inheritance step.
Frequently asked questions
Can a mutated egg hatch a different species?
Yes. In Palworld 1.0 a mutated egg can hatch a different, rarer Alpha Pal than the pair's normal child — for example, a pair that normally gives Yakumo can give Incineram Noct from a mutated egg.
What is the mutation chance?
Reported at about 1% per egg normally, and about 3% per egg with Extravagant Vegetable Cake. These are reported community figures, not published official odds.
Can mutation give me a legendary from common parents?
No. Top legendaries are locked to same-species breeding and have nothing above them to mutate into.
