How to breed in Palworld, step by step
Build a Breeding Farm, assign one male and one female Pal to it, and put Cake in the farm chest — not in your own inventory. When the breeding bar completes, an egg appears. Move the egg to an Egg Incubator and wait for it to hatch. If no egg appears, check the troubleshooting page first: the most common causes are a missing Cake, two Pals of the same gender, or Pals that were never actually assigned to the farm.
You do not need to watch the farm. Breeding progresses while the Pals are assigned, and the egg is the only output you collect. Keep Cake stocked if you plan a chain, because every egg consumes one Cake.
The CombiRank formula, in plain English
For most pairs, the game averages the two parents' CombiRank values, then picks the Pal in the formula pool whose CombiRank is closest to that average. That is why breeding moves toward the middle: a child is never rarer, in rank terms, than the rarer parent, and two high-rank parents cannot suddenly produce a low-rank legendary. To move toward a rare target, breed a strong parent back against its own offspring over several generations, closing the gap each time.
This is also why a calculator matters more than a memorised list. There are tens of thousands of possible pairs in 1.0, and a single rank change in a patch can move a pair to a different child. Use the calculator for the exact pair, and use this guide for the system around it.
Special combos and breed-true Pals
Some pairs ignore the formula and always give the same child. Verified 1.0 examples include Relaxaurus + Sparkit giving Relaxaurus Lux, Frostallion + Helzephyr giving Frostallion Noct, and Starryon + Celesdir giving Starryon Primo. If your pair is a special combo, the formula result does not apply.
At the other end, some Pals can only be bred from two of the same species. Catch your first one in the wild or from a raid, then breed that pair for better passives. The pair list on each Pal page will show only the same-species pair for those Pals.
Why pre-1.0 guides are wrong now
Palworld 1.0, released 10 July 2026, rewrote the breeding table. The famous example is Penking + Bushi: it gave Anubis before 1.0, but in 1.0 data it gives Sibelyx. Any guide, video, or combo list dated before July 2026 should be treated as suspect until it is checked against 1.0 data. This site's data is dated 2026-07-14 in its source, and it must be re-checked after any patch that mentions breeding, Pals, or CombiRank.
Frequently asked questions
What level is the Breeding Farm?
The Breeding Farm is a mid-game base structure. Unlock it in the Technology tree, build it at your base, and assign Pals to it. The exact unlock level is shown in-game in the Technology menu.
Do I need Cake for every egg?
Yes. One Cake in the farm chest produces one egg. Stock Cake before a long breeding chain.
Can I breed legendaries?
Legendary Pals must be caught first, then bred as a same-species pair. You cannot breed your way to a legendary from two common parents, because the formula averages the parents' ranks.
Step-by-step, with a worked visual example
Worked example, verified in 1.0 data: Penking + Bushi → Sibelyx (not Anubis — that was the pre-1.0 result). Penking CombiRank 2070, Bushi 1560, average floor((2070 + 1560 + 1) / 2) = 1815, closest formula-pool Pal Sibelyx 1810.
Step 1: Unlock the Breeding Farm (Technology level 19) and build it at your base. Step 2: Assign one male and one female Pal. Step 3: Put the right Cake for your goal in the farm chest — see the cake comparison. Step 4: Wait for the egg, then hatch it in an Egg Incubator. Step 5: Check passives and IVs, keep the best offspring, and breed again from the keeper pair.
For a chain, keep every intermediate: in the Anubis chain, Relaxaurus Lux, Jormuntide and Jormuntide Ignis are all useful Pals in their own right, not just stepping stones.
